Caroll Spinney, a puppeteer since the age of eight, turned an eight-foot, two-inch tall bird and a crabby trash can dwelling grouch into world-renowned cultural icons. His beloved characters — Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch — have been seen on more than 4,200 episodes, as well as Sesame Street specials, films, and television appearances. His work has garnered him numerous Emmy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. Spinney’s book, The Wisdom of Big Bird chronicles his experiences portraying the famous characters.
Below are several great videos, including the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Foundation's in-depth interview with Spinney for the Archive of American Television. Enjoy!
